Isildur was the son of Elendil, both Númenoreans. During the battle of the Last Alliance, Elendil was slain and his sword, Narsil, was broken by Sauron in hand to hand mortal combat. Isildur grabbed the broken sword and managed to cut the finger that held the One Ring off, resulting in Sauron's physical form being destroyed, but the evil spirit, although weakened, surviving, as long as the One Ring remained in existence.
