Old Man Willow may have been a disgruntled Huorn or Ent that resented the intrusion into his area of the forest by peoples. He lured the Hobbits and sought to trap and then kill them, crushing them with his roots. However Tom Bombadil arrived and, with song, soothed the creature so the Hobbits were released, relatively unharmed.
