This Balrog awoke after almost two ages of Middle-earth thanks to the delving of the Dwarves of Moria. It destroyed Moria and killed or scattered it's inhabitants. It re-awoke again when the Fellowship passed through Moria and became locked in battle with Gandalf on the bridge of Kazad-dum.
