Tom Bombadil is a mystery, incredibly powerful within his realm, impossibly ancient and intune with nature itself. He saved the Hobbits twice, once against Old Man Willow and once in the Barrow-downs. His wife Goldberry is also mysterious, perhaps only slightly less so than Tom himself. The One ring has no effect on Tom and Frodo briefly offered it to him for safe keeping.
